The Power of Festivals
EVERY single religious or cultural festival has a tremendous power to bring in people and make them get closer. Besides, it is also exploring one’s potential, entertaining people and maintaining harmony of people with their fellows and the Creator.
Our newsletter of this month’s issue will highlight some festivals held on the Island of the Gods throughout this month. Virtually every month we feature religious festival. Tumpek Krulut, for instance, poses an appreciation and expression of Hindu devotees to God for the creation of sacred sounds. The celebration bridges gamelan music to religion to create a harmony.
Then, another celebration falling this month is Eid al-Fitr or Lebaran in Bahasa Indonesia. By all means, it brings in joy for the Muslims around the world. It’s a happy moment to express a triumph after struggling for a month against passion while abstaining from eating and drinking that takes place from morning twilight to evening twilight. Two unique traditions related to the Eid Al-Fitr are homecoming and presentation of typical foods.
Unique tradition held this month is the annual kite festival. Other than involving local participants, it can usually draw the vivacity of foreign travelers to participate. So, they can show off their best work while enjoying leisure travel with family or friends. Aside from preserving the tradition of flying kites with distinctive design, this activity has also inspired and driven young generation to produce creative design of kites having penetrated export market.
Last but not least is the buffalo race in Negara, West Bali. Inspired by agrarian tradition, this race has now become a unique tourist attraction. So, travelers coming to Bali will have a wide variety of attractions to see. Here, visitors will see the agility and struggle of each participant. To jazz up, it is usually accompanied with the presentation of Jegog Dance denoting the native to Jembrana.
